Tai Kuk Wah Si Children Buddhist Camp was first organized in the year 2005. Since then, the Children Buddhist Camp was held every year during the year-end school holiday. Each year, we received hundreds of primary school students as campers and also numerous youths who actively participate as volunteers. Our camp theme is “Buddha, My Best Friend Forever” which means that we will always stay in-line with the Buddha’s teaching to purify our mind and to stay away from anguish and pain.

Our organizing committee consists of a group of passionate youth, led by Master Seck Mun Chee, the abbot of Tai Kuk Wah Si Buddhist Temple. Throughout the nine years of organizing the Buddhist Camp, we have accumulated our experiences as the organizer and we slowly developed a bond that cannot be break easily amongst the committee members. Our journey until today was filled with many challenges especially during organizing and carrying out the camp. However, we did not back down easily and instead, we faced the challenges together as a team and managed to solve every problem that confronts us. During the hard times, we had countless night that we stayed up late to prepare the activities, but at the same time it is also rewarding for us as we gained our experiences to organize such a camp. We share a common goal and vision and we believe that someday in the future; we will attain our goal that is to make the camp more meaningful together as a team.

We always place our priority to the quality of the camp instead of the quantity of the campers. We strive for modifications and improvements in our activity, meal and lodging arrangements etc. Our ultimate aim is to organize a camp that not only benefits the camper but also at the same time a chance for us to improve ourselves. In addition, we would like to create a positive atmosphere for everyone to learn, to break their bad habits and to live as a group, together.

Moreover, we believe that the children and youth will gain more understanding if they get themselves involved in the activities. Hence, most of our activities we planned are regarding about experiencing. We incorporate moral values and Buddha’s teachings into the games and activities we planned and we hope that by doing this, it will enhance the understandings of the children and the youth. We also teach the children surviving skills and help them to develop livelong skills. Besides that, we also hope that the campers can cultivate more blessings by carrying out some activities such as chanting, worshipping and pilgrimage. At the end of the camp, we will have a closing ceremony that promotes parental relationship. We invite all parents to join the ceremony and to participate in the activity with their children.

Furthermore, we also focus on the training and learning with our volunteers. We hope that the volunteers after volunteering themselves for 7 days might learn extra knowledge and experience from the camp. We have different methods to train them. Sometimes we exert pressure on them and at the same time we give them encouragements in order for them to experience different working environments. We hope that the volunteer training will help in enhancing self-abilities and improving teamwork.

Finally, we hope that “Buddha, My Best Friend Forever” can bring joy and different experiences to the participants.
